A source of energy is something which has been searched for many years. However, with an abundance of natural sources of energy available, renewable energy is now more attainable.
Energy that is generated from these natural sources can be used to power our homes, businesses and help us manage our day to day lives. While the source may differ, the output, ultimately, is the same – energy.
Sources of Energy
Energy sources take many forms, including nuclear energy & fossil energy, such as oil, coal and natural gas. Other sources include wind, solar, geothermal and hydropower. These are all primary energy sources and can be converted to electricity.
The difference between these primary sources of energy is whether they are renewable or non-renewable. A renewable energy source is any natural resource that can replace itself quickly and dependably. A non-renewable energy source is a source that will eventually run out.
Of course, renewable energy is the more sought-after source of energy and includes:
- Wind energy
- Solar energy
- Biomass
- Hydropower
- Geothermal energy
Of these energy sources, wind and solar power are the most common. So, while South Africa has been heavily dependent on coal, a non-renewable energy source, the government is looking at ways to diversify its power-generating capacity through renewable energy sources.

- According to WWF research, 95% of South Africa’s power could be generated through renewable resources, such as water, wind and sun by 2050 using technologies that already exist or are being developed.
With an abundance of natural sources of energy available, it is clear to see that renewable energy is the way of the future. It only needs to be correctly and efficiently harnessed.
